Lawn Aeration Services in Las Vegas, NV
Compacted soil is one of the most common reasons Las Vegas lawns thin out, dry up, and stop responding to regular watering. Lawn aeration fixes that. Cacti Landscapes cores small plugs from your lawn so air, water, and nutrients reach the root zone, giving your grass the conditions it needs to grow thicker and hold up through desert heat. Licensed Nevada contractor serving Las Vegas since 2002.
What Aeration Does for Your Lawn
Stronger Roots
Aeration reduces thatch buildup and gives grass room to fill in, resulting in a denser lawn that crowds out weeds over time.
Better Water Absorption
Loose soil absorbs irrigation instead of letting it run off. Less water wasted. More reaching the root zone where it counts.

Why Las Vegas Lawns Need Aeration
Las Vegas soil compacts fast. Foot traffic, desert heat, and alkaline soil conditions work against healthy root development year-round. When soil compacts, water sits on the surface instead of soaking in. Grass gets stressed even with regular irrigation because the water never reaches the roots.
Caliche, the hardened calcium carbonate layer common throughout Clark County, makes this worse. Lawns with shallow caliche can develop severe compaction within a single growing season. Without aeration, even a well-irrigated Bermuda lawn will show thin patches, runoff, and stress.
Core aeration removes small plugs of soil 2 to 3 inches deep, breaking up that compaction and opening channels for water, oxygen, and fertilizer to penetrate. The plugs break down on the surface within a few weeks and return organic matter to the soil.
Signs Your Las Vegas Lawn Needs Aeration
Your lawn is telling you it needs aeration if you see any of these:
- Water pools or runs off instead of soaking in after irrigation.
- The soil feels hard or concrete-like when you press a screwdriver into it.
- Grass looks thin or patchy despite regular watering and fertilization.
- Thatch layer exceeds half an inch.
- High-traffic areas near walkways or play zones look worn and sparse.
- Your lawn hasn’t been aerated in more than two years.
When to Aerate a Las Vegas Lawn
Timing depends on your grass type.
Bermuda grass and zoysia: Aerate in late spring to early summer, May through June, when the grass is actively growing and can recover quickly. Avoid aerating Bermuda during dormancy; compacted, dormant grass is slow to recover and more vulnerable to weed invasion.
Tall fescue: Aerate in early fall, September through October, when soil temperatures are still warm but air temperatures have dropped. Fall aeration pairs well with overseeding to thicken a fescue lawn before winter.
Overseeding Bermuda with perennial ryegrass: Aerate in late September before overseeding to improve seed-to-soil contact and reduce compaction ahead of the rye establishment period.
Most Las Vegas lawns benefit from aeration once a year. High-traffic lawns or properties with severe caliche may need it every year without exception.
Core Aeration vs. Spike Aeration
Core aeration is the only method worth doing on a Las Vegas lawn. A core aerator removes actual plugs of soil, creating open channels for water, air, and nutrients. Spike aerators only puncture the surface; they don’t remove material and can actually increase compaction around the holes over time.
Cacti uses core aeration equipment on every job. We pull 2- to 3-inch plugs spaced 2 to 4 inches apart for even coverage. For heavily compacted lawns, we make two passes in a crisscross pattern.
Aeration and Overseeding
Aeration is the best time to overseed. The holes created by core aeration give seed direct contact with soil, better germination rates, and protection from heat and wind. If you want to thicken a thin Bermuda lawn or establish perennial ryegrass for winter color, overseeding immediately after aeration produces significantly better results than overseeding alone.
Lawn Aeration as Part of Ongoing Yard Care
Aeration produces the best results when it’s part of a regular landscape maintenance plan rather than a one-time fix. Combined with consistent irrigation, correct mowing height, and scheduled yard clean-ups, annual aeration keeps Las Vegas lawns healthy through the full growing cycle.
If your irrigation system isn’t delivering water efficiently to begin with, aeration alone won’t solve runoff or dry patch problems. Our irrigation repair and evaluation service assesses whether your system is distributing water evenly across the lawn.
Why Choose Cacti Landscapes for Lawn Aeration
Not every crew aerating Las Vegas lawns understands desert soil conditions. Caliche behaves differently from typical clay or sandy soil. Bermuda timing windows are tighter than most guides suggest. We’ve learned all of this firsthand, working Las Vegas lawns since 2002.

FAQs
For Bermuda grass and zoysia, aerate in late spring to early summer, May through June when the grass is actively growing. For tall fescue, aerate in early fall, September through October. Aerating during dormancy weakens the grass and slows recovery.
Most Las Vegas lawns benefit from aeration once a year. Lawns with heavy foot traffic, severe caliche, or persistent thin patches may need annual aeration without exception. Well-draining lawns with light use can sometimes go two years between treatments.
Core aeration removes actual plugs of soil, creating open channels for water, air, and nutrients. Spike aeration only punctures the surface without removing material and can increase compaction around the holes over time. Cacti uses core aeration on every job.
Yes, and it’s the recommended approach. Aeration holes give grass seed direct soil contact and better germination rates. For Bermuda lawns being overseeded with perennial ryegrass for winter, aerate in late September before spreading seed.
