Tree Planting Services in Las Vegas, NV

Planting the wrong tree in Las Vegas costs more than the tree. Species that can’t handle Mojave heat, alkaline soil, or caliche will fail within two summers, sometimes one. Cacti Landscapes selects, sources, and plants trees suited to Clark County conditions so they establish correctly and survive long-term. Licensed Nevada contractor serving Las Vegas since 2002.

Why Tree Planting in Las Vegas Requires Local Knowledge

Most tree planting guides are written for moderate climates. Las Vegas is not a moderate climate. Temperatures regularly exceed 110°F in summer. Soil pH runs alkaline throughout Clark County. Caliche layers sit 6 to 18 inches below the surface and stop roots cold if not broken through at planting.

A tree planted without accounting for these conditions will show stress within the first season and typically fail by the second. The most common mistakes, such as wrong species, wrong depth, wrong timing, skipping caliche, and overwatering new plantings, are all avoidable with the right approach.

Cacti Landscapes has planted trees throughout the Las Vegas Valley, from Summerlin to Henderson to the far edges of Clark County, since 2002. We know which species establish reliably here, how to read soil conditions before digging, and how to set new trees up to thrive for decades, not just survive until the establishment watering stops.

Trees That Thrive in Las Vegas

Species selection is the most important step in Las Vegas tree planting. We recommend species based on your yard’s sun exposure, spacing constraints, soil conditions, and watering setup. We don’t recommend the same tree for every property. These are the trees that perform consistently in Mojave Desert conditions:

Palo Verde

The most reliable desert shade tree in Southern Nevada. Distinctive green bark, vibrant yellow spring blooms, filtered shade. Thornless hybrid varieties hold a naturally rounded form with minimal pruning. Allow at least 10 feet from walls for canopy spread.

Desert Willow

Fast-growing Southwestern native with trumpet-shaped blooms in pink, purple, burgundy, and white, depending on variety, from late spring through fall. Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Attracts hummingbirds and pollinators. One of the best choices for color and structure in a desert yard.

Fruitless Olive

Evergreen with silver-green foliage, drought-tolerant once established, and handles reflected heat from stucco walls well. A practical choice for west and south exposures common across Las Vegas homes.

Mesquite

Native desert tree with filtered shade and a rugged, naturalistic form. Extremely drought-tolerant once established. Works well in both formal and desert-style landscapes.

Shoestring Acacia

Fast-growing with airy, fine-textured canopy. Provides movement and shade without dominating the yard.

Crape Myrtle

Deciduous with a long summer-to-fall bloom season in pink, purple, red, and white. Well-suited to Las Vegas conditions and widely used across Clark County.

When to Plant Trees in Las Vegas

Timing matters in the desert.

Fall (October through November) is the best planting window for most Las Vegas trees. Roots get a full cool season to establish before facing summer heat. Ground temperatures remain warm enough to support root growth through winter.

Spring (February through April) works for most species but gives less establishment time before the first summer.

Summer is the wrong time for most tree planting. Heat stress on a newly planted tree with an undeveloped root system is difficult to manage. Avoid it unless the species and irrigation setup make it viable.

Our Tree Planting Process

Getting a tree established in Las Vegas soil requires more than digging a hole and adding water.

Site Assessment

We evaluate sun exposure, spacing, soil conditions, proximity to structures, and irrigation coverage before selecting or sourcing a tree for your property.

Caliche Management

Las Vegas caliche layers stop roots cold. We break through the caliche layer at planting to give roots a clear path to establish deeper. This is a non-negotiable step in Clark County; skipping it is the primary reason trees fail here.

Correct Planting Depth

Plant a tree too deep and it develops crown rot. Too shallow, and the root zone dries out before it can establish. We set every tree at the correct depth for its species and your soil type, so it gets one shot at doing this right.

Soil Preparation

We amend soil as needed to improve drainage and root contact. In heavy caliche or compacted soil, proper backfill preparation directly affects first-year survival.

Initial Irrigation Setup

New trees in Las Vegas need consistent deep watering for the first two to three weeks, then a sharp reduction as roots develop. We set expectations for your establishment watering schedule so you don't overwater, which looks identical to drought stress and kills more desert trees than underwatering does.

Mulching

A proper mulch ring holds soil moisture, moderates root zone temperature, and keeps weed competition away from the trunk. We apply mulch at the correct depth and distance from the trunk flare, too close and it invites rot, too far and it does nothing for establishment. See our full mulch installation process for how we handle this across your whole property, not just around new trees.

We’ve planted trees across every neighborhood in Clark County. We know the soil, the species, and what Las Vegas conditions actually require.

Species Selection Built for the Mojave

We don’t recommend trees that look good at the nursery but fail in desert soil. Every recommendation is based on what survives and thrives in this climate long-term.

Caliche Management on Every Job

We break through caliche at planting. It’s not optional and it’s not something we skip to save time.

Straight Pricing Before We Start

We assess the site and give you a number before any work begins.

Tree Planting as Part of a Complete Landscape Plan

Trees anchor a landscape. They work best when planted alongside a complete landscape design plan rather than as an afterthought. New trees also need irrigation coverage. Our $80 flat-rate irrigation evaluation confirms your drip system is delivering water to the right zones before and after planting.

After trees establish, ongoing landscape maintenance and preventative plant care keep them healthy through the full seasonal cycle.

FAQs

Desert-adapted species perform best in Clark County conditions. Top choices include Palo Verde, Desert Willow, Fruitless Olive, Mesquite, Shoestring Acacia, and Crape Myrtle. Species selection depends on your yard’s sun exposure, soil conditions, spacing, and irrigation setup. We recommend based on your specific property, not a generic list.

Fall, October through November is the ideal planting window. Trees get a full cool season to establish roots before facing summer heat. Spring planting works for most species but leaves less establishment time. Summer planting is not recommended for most trees in the Las Vegas climate.

Caliche is a hardened calcium carbonate layer common in Clark County soil, typically found 6 to 18 inches below the surface. It acts as a physical barrier that stops roots from growing deeper. If not broken through at planting, trees develop shallow root systems that can’t sustain the tree through Las Vegas summers. We break through caliche on every job.

New trees need consistent deep watering for the first two to three weeks after planting, then irrigation should be reduced sharply as roots develop. Overwatering new desert trees is as damaging as underwatering, both causing wilting and root stress. We provide a specific establishment watering schedule based on the species and time of year.

Yes, we plant Mexican Fan Palms, Date Palms, and other palm species suited to Las Vegas conditions. Palm planting requires correct depth and frond management during establishment. Contact us for a quote specific to your palm planting project.
